The 2009 Forum, “Values, Knowledge, Environment, Participation. Gears for human development sustainability”, aimed to initiate a dialogue on the principles which the Simone Cesaretti Foundation considers fundamental in order to propel a sustainable development process in spatial, temporal and dimensional terms. Respect for values and the environment, scientific advances and the participation of individuals in the development process, are basic principles which, if perfectly synchronised, can function as veritable gears which set in motion strategies capable of overcoming the challenges to human development sustainability. The talks during the Forum analysed the meaning and the role of these principles, while the exchange of views provided by the Round Table offered food for thought on the possible courses to be taken in order to help overcome the complex challenges to sustainability.
